Free childcare for Mum's – expectation or reality?

Updated: Mar 27

Last year's budget hailed many expectations about free childcare for working moms. The good intentions were laid out in the Education Hub.

Whilst the Government's direction of travel is laid out, media speculation and opposition challenges make it clear that delivery doesn't pass muster!

But what is the process for a working mum on universal credit to get fifteen hours of free childcare each week? Typically, this involves several steps:

1.   Check Eligibility: First, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. Generally, this includes being a working parent, earning a minimum income per week, and your child between the ages of 3 and 4.

2.   Apply for Universal Credit: If you still need to, apply for Universal Credit through the UK government's website or by contacting the Universal Credit helpline. You must provide your income, housing costs, and other personal details.

3.   Apply for Free Childcare: Once you receive Universal Credit, you can apply for 15 hours of free childcare weekly. This is typically done through the Government's childcare services website. You must create an account and provide information about your child and employment status.

4.   Choose a Childcare Provider: After your application is approved, you can choose a registered childcare provider offering free childcare hours. This could be a nursery, preschool, or childminder.

5.   Inform Your Childcare Provider: Once you've selected a childcare provider, inform them you'll use free childcare hours. They may have procedures for registering your child and arranging the childcare sessions.

6.   Claiming Free Childcare: The childcare provider will claim the funding for the free hours directly from the Government. You may need to provide them with specific details or documents to facilitate this process.

7.   Keep Updated: Ensure your information is updated with Universal Credit and your childcare provider. Changes in your employment status or personal circumstances could affect your eligibility for free childcare.

8.   Review and Renewal: Your eligibility for Universal Credit and free childcare will be reviewed periodically. Please provide any requested information promptly to ensure continued access to these benefits.

The process may vary slightly depending on your specific circumstances and location. You can find more detailed information and assistance through government websites, helplines, and local childcare services, including those below:
